Our Story

A family's devotion to an ancient art form, carried across generations.

Where it began

Born in 1999, rooted in Tamil Nadu

Shree Jai Arts was founded in 1999 with a singular purpose: to ensure that the centuries-old art of Tanjore painting would not just survive, but thrive in modern homes across the world.

Tanjore painting — known as Thanjavur painting in Tamil — is one of South India's most revered classical art forms. Distinguished by its rich surface texture, vivid colours, compact composition, and the liberal use of real gold foil, semi-precious stones, and glass beads, each painting is a labour of devotion that can take weeks or months to complete.

What began as a family workshop in the heart of Tamil Nadu has grown into a brand that ships heirloom-quality paintings to homes across Australia, the United Kingdom, North America, and beyond — without ever compromising on the handcrafted integrity that makes each piece unique.

The craft

Every layer tells a story

A Tanjore painting begins with a cloth pasted onto a wooden base. Chalk powder and adhesive are applied to create a smooth, stone-like surface — the canvas for everything that follows.

Colours are mixed from natural pigments and applied with fine brushes in careful, deliberate strokes. Deities, divine figures, and sacred scenes emerge from hours of patient, meditative work.

Then comes the gold. Real 22-carat gold leaf is hand-pressed into the wet adhesive, section by section, to create the luminous, textured borders and jewellery that Tanjore paintings are famous for. Semi-precious stones — rubies, emeralds, pearls — are embedded by hand to bring the figures to life.

The finished painting is set into a solid teak wood frame, sustainably sourced and finished to complement the painting's warmth and richness. What arrives at your door is not a print or a reproduction — it is an original work of art, made by hand, for your family.
